Albeit known within the industry as the “John Mayer” Daytona, there is a lot more to this particular reference than just a hype YouTube video. Introduced in 2016, and somewhat overlooked for the beginning of its time due to being launched alongside the hugely-popular Ceramic Daytonas in steel, it did take a good few years for people to realise the impeccable looks and historical importance of such watch. At heart, the watch is just a reference 116508, which is the yellow gold Daytona available with a range of dials, from plain colours, to diamond hour markers and more. However, what sets this particular variant apart from the rest, and what allows the watch to have such a strong demand is that beautiful green dial within the 40mm case. Displaying a sun-ray green dial, the watch is toned down and contrasted by red details throughout its sub-dial counters, the five minute markers, and of course on the “Daytona” text. It’s 18ct yellow gold sub-dial ring surrounds and hour markers surrounding the circumference of the dial compliment the yellow gold case perfectly and make for an incredibly attractive package. Described as “bright green” by Rolex themselves, the dial actually displays a range of different looks depending on the light in which the watch is within. Almost black and subtle in dark environments, yet vibrant and fun in more sunny and bright environments, one almost gets two watches for the price of one with this wristwatch. Housed within the watch is Rolex’s ever-reliable self-winding calibre 4130 movement, which boasts a 72-hour power reserve, all whilst being cased in a 40mm case which is water resistant to 100 meters.
