This Rolex is in good used condition complete with rolex box. Circa 1970's. Offered here is a stunning example of the Rolex Explorer II 1655 nick-named the ‘Steve McQueen and Freccione (BIG ARROW) dial’ by the Rolex collecting community. Manufactured circa 1975. The Rolex Explorer II Reference 1655 was introduced in 1971. The Explorer II was fitted with an orange GMT hand to be used as a day/night indicator for professionals that didn’t see daylight for long time periods. If you consider cave explorers and climbers who were in environments that stay dark for long periods, to assist with their timekeeping. The Explorer Ref. 1665 has a fixed stainless-steel bezel that possesses engraved 24-hour indications to support the GMT function of the large orange 24-hour hand. The 1655 Explorer II's contained the in-house Rolex Automatic Calibre 1570. Sometimes the Rolex Explorer reference 1655 is referred to as the Steve McQueen Explorer. The truth is that this is a total myth as Steve never wore one or owned one. Steve personally owned a Rolex 5512 which he wore on his right wrist as well as a Heuer Monaco, but he never did wear the Explorer ref 1655. This example is a MKII variation identified by the lollipop second-hand. The lume of hour plots has achieved an excellent yellow colouration creating a lovely contrast against the matte black dial. The original hands remain in flawless condition as well with the lume ageing to match the dial perfectly. This example has the correct matte dial and handset for its 398---- serial number range. The 1655 Explorer II has become a truly impressive vintage icon. The overall condition of this Explorer 1655 MKII is very good. The case has been sympathetically polished in the past but retains strong equal lugs and crown guards along with the brushed finish to the top edges and chamfers remaining very well defined, the stainless-steel bezel with its 24 hour engraved markers has no major dings or scratches and enhances the overall appearance of this 1655 Explorer MKII. The Plexiglass is the correct flat type inclusive of the Cyclops date window for this model, it is also free of any detrimental scratches or marks. The watch comes on a correct Rolex 78360 Oyster bracelet with 580 end links and is showing only average wear and stretch. This stunning 1655 Explorer II is accompanied by its original Rolex box.
