Description |
Of all the watches that I collect and sell, this is perhaps the only firm that needs little introduction, having built its business over the last century on high quality, innovation, and style. The Rolex Watch Co. of Switzerland, founded by Hans Wilsdorf and his brother in law Alfred Davis, would first establish his business in England (1908) before settling in Switzerland. By 1919, Wilsdorf had established the Manufacture des Montres Rolex, at a time when the movements were crafted in Bienne and the watches were hand-finished in Geneva. On average, more than 200 technicians are involved in producing a single Rolex wristwatch, quite remarkable
In 1977, after five years of design, development, and testing, Rolex introduced their first completely in-house quartz movements (the 5035 and 5055) and the Datejust (5035) and Day-Date (5055) Oysterquartz models that would house them. When they were introduced, the 5035 and 5055 quartz modules were marvels of technology as well as fit and finish. These 11 jewel movements utilized the latest CMOS circuitry, a 32khz oscillator, and analog thermo compensation. In addition, they were finished to even higher standards than Rolex's mechanical movements. It is no exaggeration to say that even today, no quartz movement produced by any watch company can compare to the 5035/5055 from the standpoint of sheer beauty. For 25 years Rolex produced the Oysterquartz in Datejust models (17000 stainless steel, 17013 steel/YG, 17014 steel/WG), and Day-Date models in all gold (19018 YG, 19019 WG). Special models of the Oysterquartz were also produced with jeweled dials, bezels, and bracelets. It has been estimated that in all less than 25,000 Oysterquartz watches were ever produced. ROLEX OYSTERQUARTZ DESIGN POINT #1 The design of the Oysterquartz deviated from the Rolex classic look and featured a Gerald Genta designed case and bracelet. Gerald Genta got this watch every bit as right as he did the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Nautilus. Pure 70s, the look fell from favor during the popular return to automatic in the late 1980s but has aged superbly. The Oysterquartz's broad shoulders makes the watch look larger on the wrist than it is, and given larger watches are in vogue, it would make perfect sense for a 1970s Oysterquartz to look fresh today. ROLEX OYSTERQUARTZ DESIGN POINT #2 Rolex Datejusts on a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet are very easily recognized. An Oysterquartz is instantly recognized by its unique look. Specifications: Brand: Rolex Model: Oysterquartz Serial #: 8659057 Year of Production: 1985 Reference #: 17013 Gender: Men or Women Case Material: Stainless Steel Case Diameter: 36mm, not including crown ~ because of the squared off case design, the watch plays bigger on the wrist than 36mm Crown: Original signed crown sets the time and quickset date and screws down properly Bracelet Material: 18k Solid Yellow Gold & Stainless Steel Bracelet Specifications: Original signed bracelet 17013 will fit a wrist up to 7.5" ~ can be adjusted smaller ~ no extra links Dial Color: Champagne Dial Condition: Original clean signed dial Winding Mechanism: Original calibre 5035 quartz (battery operated) movement runs strong and accurate ~ patented instantaneous shutter-like date change near midnight ~ has the quick-set date feature ~ open 6's and 9's on the date wheel Crystal: Original scratch free sapphire crystal, however it has light chipping between 12-3 o'clock Box/Papers: No box or papers Overall Condition: very good condition ~ signed clean dial ~ signed swiss quartz (battery operated) movement runs strong and accurate ~ signed crown sets the time and quickset date and screws down as intended ~ sapphire crystal has light chipping between 12-3 o'clock otherwise has no scratches ~ all functions working properly ~ has surface scratches on bracelet and case from over 35 years of normal use can be buffed out ~ has small dent on bracelet clasp ~ no damage ~ all of our watches have been tested and serviced if needed ~ stunning |
