rolex comex 16800

"rolex submariner 16800 comex

In 1984, a number of Comex divers celebrating 10 years of service were presented with a Rolex Submariner 16800 with a comex logo dial and specially engraved cases bearing the name and number and date of issue.
It is interesting to note that these watches all featured a special dial that excluded the words scoc with only the comex logo, the submariner and the depth rating (sometimes inverted) written under the hands.

The example we are offering for sale here is one of the 5. It contains the diver's name on the case back as well as the issue number and date of presentation and is sold with the original papers and box set.

"In 1963 :

A close collaboration was agreed between Rolex and the Compagnie Maritime d'Expertises (comex), whose divers wore Rolex Sea-Dweller watches when working at great depths. The company, led by Henri Germain Delauze, is one of the pioneers of deep-sea diving and still enjoys a worldwide reputation as a specialist in hyperbaric technology and underwater work.

The relationship between Rolex and comex is as close as ever, as evidenced by the overpressure tank developed by the Marseille-based company specifically for testing the Rolex Deepsea models."

"comex is a French diving company founded in 1961 to explore the depths of the oceans. The nasa of the deep sea.

From 1970 to 1997, comex worked closely with Rolex and many of their deep sea divers were given Rolex sd as a tool for their work. Rolex used this to test some of their new watches and solve some problems with comex, such as decompression divers and their watches not being able to withstand depths. The Helium Escape Valve (hev) was developed and tested on the 5513 5514 (reference for comex only) for comex before becoming commercially available in the original SeaDweller in 1967.

comex watches have also been associated with records and experiments, such as the maximum depth of 701 meters or the Hydra experiments and it is common to see these watches engraved with details of the experiments.

What makes them so very collectible is that they were never sold by stores (authorized dealers) and were only issued to divers or officials and that they were produced in extremely small quantities even after all these years with comex. They also have special features and unique comex serial numbers and engravings in the case leaves that make them very interesting for collectors.

They played an important role in the development of the watches we wear today.
