Description |
In 1860, Officine Panerai started life as a watchmaker’s shop, which, rather unusually, also sold maritime equipment. Decades later, in the early 1900s, the brand became the official supplier for the Italian Frogmen, who famously wore their watches – designed in collaboration with Rolex SA - while piloting torpedos towards docked enemy ships. They would then attach limpet mines to those ships and, hopefully, make it back in time to avoid the explosions that followed. As you can imagine, a legible and dependable timekeeping device was an absolute must for these specialized soldiers, so that's exactly what Panerai provided. The brand also supplied the Royal Italian Navy with a wide array of technical equipment and precision instruments, which further cemented its place in horological history.
Since Panerai tends to follow a similar design language for all of its watches, the watch on offer here – the 1950 Submersible – strongly resembles its predecessors. Its large cushion-shaped case and protruding crown guard are both considered defining staples of Panerai design, and it's not at all hard to see why they're so beloved by the Paneristi. The dial strays away from the traditional Luminor layout, but it holds on to some of that unmistakable character. What's more, it features a lithium-powered depth gauge, which displays both the maximum depth reached during the most recent dive and the depth of the current dive around the outer rim. It would be great to see this feature incorporated in more modern dive watches - it is, after all, the perfect complication for those who intend to use them as purpose dictates. The movement inside, the in-house Panerai Calibre OP XV, boasts a 42-hour power reserve and operates at 28,800 bph. Our offering is in excellent condition, comes with box but without papers. The watch is covered by 1 year of limited warranty. |
