The first few decades of the nineteenth century ushered in a magnificent watch brand - the Jaeger-LeCoultre. Its manufacturer - Jaeger-LeCoultre - is headquartered in Le Sentier, Switzerland and boasts of numerous impressive inventions. The Jaeger-LeCoultre inventions include a thousand calibers; amongst them is the world’s smallest. The company is also credited with the invention of complicated wristwatches and timepieces that move continuously. Antoine LeCoultre (1803-1881) – the founder of the brand – was a magnificent craftsman who derived his inspiration from a cutting machine he invented in 1833. He began his watchmaking endeavours in a humble way. His first workshop – a small one - was based in Le Sentier. From there, he developed timepieces that wowed many.
Antoine’s ancestors were French Huguenots from Lisy-sur-Ourcq. They left their country in the sixteenth century as a result of being persecuted for their religious faith. They bought property in the Vallée de Joux where they settled. Le Sentier Village, which they helped establish, flourished as a result of a church they built there in 1612. As aforementioned, Jaeger-LeCoultre manufacturing operations are based there today. Antoine LeCoultre would succeed in his endeavours. He invented the Millionomètre in 1844. Today, we set watches and rewind them without keys because of the ingenuity of this man. Owing to his achievements, he received a prestigious global award in 1851 at an exhibition that was held in London.
Elie LeCoultre (1842-1917) was Antoine’s son. Together with his father, he formed LeCoultre & Cie in 1866. The inspiration behind this establishment was the desire to carry out all operations in one place. This led to the eradication of all the numerous workshops that had existed hitherto. The establishment was the first one of its kind in the Vallée de Joux. By 1870, complicated processes had become partially mechanized and the company changed its name again. It adopted the name ‘Grande Maison of the Vallée de Joux’. By 1903, the company’s control has passed on to Antoine’s grandson - Jacques-David LeCoultre. The latter took up a challenge from a Paris-based watchmaker - Edmond Jaeger. Edmond encouraged Swiss watchmakers to embrace his ultra-thin inventions. This led – in 1907 – to the birth of the world’s thinnest pocket watch. Thereafter, Jaeger and LeCoultre collaborated on various projects. They adopted the brand name Jaeger-LeCoultre, officially, in 1937.
