Van Cleef & Arpels

Alfred Van Cleef and his father-in-law, Saloman Arpels founded the company in 1896. In 1906, following Arpels’s death, Alfred and two of his brothers-in-law, Charles and Julien, acquired space for Van Cleef & Arpels at 22 Place Vendôme, across from the Hôtel Ritz, where Van Cleef & Arpels opened its first boutique shop. The third Arpels brother, Louis, soon joined the company. Over the past century, Van Cleef and Arpels has designed and created some of the most important jewels and timepieces ever made and has capitavited the worlds most elite clients with their creations and designs. Famously selected as the preferred jewelry house to many celeberties and royalty alike, including the Duchess of Windsor and Elizabeth Taylor to name a few, Van Cleef and Arpels is considered one of the most elite jewelry houses and design firms and is world renown for having created the most innovative and cutting edge designs such as the van cleef and arpels zipper necklace and the mystery setting mount.

The present example is in excellent condition and is fully signed, serial numbered & French hallmarked, respectively. The cameo in the center is designed with a neoclassical motif of an Angel or putti which was a common theme in this timeframe for many various artworks and is accented by various forms of enameling around the bezel and the pendants fluted case. As Van Cleef was first starting out they were primarily producing jewelry creations which makes this timepiece more rare as so few examples were produced.
As of one the firms earlier creations, the present example incorporates a unique form of Enameling known as Bassetaille to create a monochromatic or metallic sheen enamel coloring which is often used to illustrate the shape of the piece being enameled.Additionally, the pendant hangs from a delicate millegrain platinum and diamond set wreath which is also very indicative of the timeframes stylistic designs that were based on the elements of leaves and other shapes found in nature.

Bassetaille is an enameling technique in which the artist creates a low-relief pattern in metal, usually silver or gold, or by engraving or chasing. The entire pattern is created in such a way that its highest point is lower than the surrounding metal.
A translucent enamel is then applied to the metal, allowing light to reflect from the relief and creating an artistic effect. It was used in the late Middle Ages, and then again in the 17th century.
