Vacheron Constantin Early 1930’s Single-Button Chronograph Wrist Watch with Enamel Dial

For sale is a Vacheron Constantin 18k yellow gold manual-wind men’s single-button chronograph wrist watch. This rare vintage early 1930’s chronograph has a hinged case back and a white enamel dial and is triple-signed on its dial, case, and movement. These Vacheron Constantin single-button chronograph wristwatches are quite rare – and also technically and esthetically remarkable, both in terms of their iconography and the conception of the movement.

The watch has a three-piece body made of solid 18k gold, with a flat angled bezel, a hinged case back, and triangular downward-turned lugs. It has a large round 35mm case (without the crown or lugs) that is about 7mm thick (about 12mm thick with the large domed crystal), with an original deeply scalloped crown. The outside of the case is stamped with the queen’s head Swiss proof mark (under one of the lugs).

It has a white enamel dial signed “Vacheron Constantin” and “Swiss” with black Arabic numerals, a chronograph ring with black Arabic numerals for every five seconds, black indexes for every second, and smaller black indexes for every fifth-of-a-second. It has a subsidiary seconds dial at the 9:00 position with a black chapter ring with black Arabic numbers every ten seconds and individual second indexes in between. It has a subsidiary chronograph minutes dial at the 3:00 position (for use up to thirty minutes) with black Arabic numbers every five minutes and individual minute indexes in between. In short, the chronograph can track elapsed time to a fifth of a second for up to thirty minutes. All five hands are black. The white enamel dial is in beautiful condition with no cracks or blemishes.

The movement’s serial number is 417468, which means that the watch was manufactured circa 1932-1935. The chronograph movement is signed “Vacheron & Constantin,” “Geneve,” and 417468, with the Vacheron & Constantin logo and “fausses cotes” decoration. The inside of the hinged 18k gold case cover is signed “Vacheron & Constantin,” “Swiss,” 417468, with the Vacheron & Constantin logo and several proof marks, including “0.750,” “18K,” a queen’s head Swiss proof mark, and key.

The watch comes with an original vintage Vacheron Constantin leather box, with an emerald green velvet interior, brass latch, framed and padded satin pillow insert signed “Vacheron Constantin, Proud Possession of Royalty, Since 1755,” and a paper floor listing persons of Royalty who owned V&C watches, beginning with “Napoleon I, Emperor of France.” Some portion of the leather is beginning to separate from the wood on one top corner of the case.

The watch comes with a black Stuller crocodile-style leather strap with an aftermarket gold-tone buckle. Sold as is with an original vintage Vacheron Constantin box, as described above. No original papers. The watch has not been serviced recently but is in proper working order and keeps approximate time, but it is sold in “as is” condition with no warranty because it is a vintage wrist watch. Please see my feedback as a seller of high-quality vintage watches.
