Cult Watch With a Rotating Inner Compass Ring

The Seiko Alpinist SARB017 was part of the Japanese manufacturer's catalog from 2006 to 2019. The model is a new edition of the Red Alpinist ref. SCVF009, manufactured between 1995 and the early 2000s.

One of the most striking features of the SARB017 is the extra crown at 4 o'clock, which is used to operate the rotating inner compass ring. Other details of the 38-mm watch include a green dial with applied hour markers, cathedral hands, a date display, and a sapphire crystal.

The watch is water-resistant to 200 m (20 bar, 656 ft) and is powered by the Seiko caliber 6R15.

Reasons to Buy a Seiko Alpinist SARB017

About the Seiko SARB017

The 38-mm case of the Seiko SARB017 is made of stainless steel. The watch is moderately sized, measuring in at just under 13 mm thick and 46 mm lug to lug, and is thus a great unisex option. The top of the case is brushed, while the case sides and bezel are polished.

The SARB017 features a dark green sunburst dial with golden, applied hour markers that alternate between Arabic numerals and wedge-shaped indices. The edge of the dial hosts a printed minute track with luminous dots. The date window is housed at 3 o'clock. The design is rounded off with a golden bezel.

The timepiece has the cathedral hands often found on pilot's watches from the 1920s and 30s. They are golden and filled with luminous material.

This reference's special feature is the outermost ring of the dial, also known as the rehaut. Seiko chose to design it as a rotating ring with a compass scale. This inner rotating ring is operated via a second crown at 4 o'clock. The compass ring is used to determine the cardinal directions with the help of the time display and the position of the sun.

The watch is protected from the elements by an anti-reflective, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Seiko decided against a date magnifier for the SARB017, a feature that is present on the Red Alpinist from 1995.

In-House Caliber Seiko SARB017

Inside the stainless steel case, you'll find the Seiko automatic caliber 6R15. This movement offers a stop-seconds mechanism, manual winding option, and a 50-hour power reserve. The balance oscillates at a frequency of 21,600 vph.

How much does the Seiko Alpinist SARB017 cost?

At the time of writing in January 2023, you could buy a new Seiko Alpinist SARB017 on Chrono24 for around 1,000 USD new. Pre-owned models cost around 800 USD.

Prices for new and pre-owned watches have risen noticeably in the last few years. In January 2021, the SARB017 was valued at around 675 USD, while pre-owned copies were worth about 620 USD. This means that this Seiko reference has appreciated by 48% and 29%, respectively. As demand for this reference is still high, the outlook for its financial performance is positive.

Alternatives to the SARB017

A more affordable alternative to the SARB017 is its successor model, the ref. SPB121. This reference was launched in 2020 and is part of the Prospex Land collection. At 39.5 mm, the watch is somewhat larger than the previous version. What's more, the dial features a date magnifier and the Prospex logo. This model uses the caliber 6R35, which offers a 70-hour power reserve. You can buy a new Seiko Prospex Alpinist SPB121 on Chrono24 for around 650 USD.

Another option worth considering is the Red Alpinist SCVF009. Its design is almost identical to that of the SARB017, but you'll notice the red Alpinist inscription on the dial. It also features a date magnifier and uses the caliber 4S15. These Seiko watches are relatively rare, so you should budget between 1,000 and 2,000 USD, depending on the watch's condition.
