During the present timeframe which this piece was produced, Piaget was emerging at the height of their brand and entered their golden age as they produced many of the firm’s most unique and legendary designs. Piaget’s revolutionary philosophy took an entirely different approach to society’s perception of the conventional wristwatch design with their focus on producing wristwatch concepts which took advantage of their master gem setting skills to produce bracelet watches which were considered more a piece of jewelry than that of a conventional wristwatch design that was typically focused on function. As demonstrated by the present example, Piaget combined their already established master gem setting skills with a newly innovated technology to engineer one of the world’s most ultra-thin movements of the period allowing Piaget’s creations to stand out from all other examples in their period as they had the unique dual master skill sets in both gem setting and watchmaking therefore allowing their firm to produce the periods most eye catching and unique timepiece concepts to be produced as a result. As there was a newfound shift in society which empowered women as a result of their role in the world wars for assistance to win, new design concepts were also being commissioned and specially ordered by female royalty, world leaders and celebrities alike such as Elizabeth Taylor or Jackie Kennedy in this period by this firm who would reach out to Piaget for a new demand of a different style of bracelet watch than ever seen before. Because it was also considered rude for women to check the time in the company of others at events, leading design firms produced especially unique and beautiful concepts such as the present example which was designed with channel set step cut diamonds, marquis cut stones and brilliant round cut diamonds to place a Piaget twist on the common diamond tennis bracelet of the period which upheld the highest standards of design and most innovation technology in gem set skills and watchmaking demonstrated in the period. The present Diamond Sun Spray Motif Tennis Style Bracelet watch embodies this unique design dual element where master watchmaking and master gem setting intersected as the present example is noticeably different from other ordinary tennis bracelet watches of previous periods which were commonly produced in only the most common brilliant round cut diamond since it was not only more cost effective but easier stone to source, match, cut and design with than the present example. Instead, as designed on the present example- which is Instantly different than other period designs because it is not only more sleek, but also it is designed with 3 different stone cuts which at this time was considered extremely difficult, costly and timely to commission and also much more rare as master jewelers were required to pay special attention to each stone’s source, size, matching and also to plan ahead with micro measurements since the technology was so limited back then in both skill sets that Piaget broke new records with. The key element of the timepiece is its bezel which is designed with a diamond set Sun Spray Motif and is extra unique for multiple reasons as the firm’s design concept is set with diamond stones around the dial that are channel set and with Step Cut Baguettes diamonds in order to produce a very unique and dramatic hall of mirrors effect that is not only a very rarely executed stone and unique in design, but also extremely difficult for master gem setters to work with in order to produce this extra dramatic light effect when worn. Step cut baguette diamonds are especially unique from other diamond cuts. They were originally introduced in the Art Deco Period and largely appreciated as being different than that of the more conventional diamond stone types which society was used to as they were characterized by their geometric forms and clean lines which the 1920s were best known for. Because of the stones physical make up, they produce what is known as a hall-of-mirrors effect when cut correctly, which is a larger, and more prismatic reflection that creates flashes of light. These flashes of light complement the dark planes of each step which are produced as a result of how they are cut, so it is not your typical diamond by any means. Instead, their cut produces a uniquely identifiable flat, crystal-clear ice look rather than a frosty flare which more common brilliant round cut diamonds produce since one can see through the step cuts so clearly making it also appear like a diamond that is in its most rare form as well. This special effect is driven by the fact that step cut diamonds are sharper with more pronounced edges than other diamonds and create a distinct rectangle shape with larger facets that draw attention to the center of the stone and cause light to reflect in a more distinct, hologram-like way than any other diamond cut known. Unlike other diamonds, this effect comes from the fact that step cuts have a 5-to-1 ratio of length to width, so they have large straight facets arranged in parallel lines on all four sides to draw the viewer’s specifically to the attention to the center of the stone reminiscent of the steps of an Aztec temple or pyramid, hence its nickname as a step cut. In addition, the difficulty in cutting this stone comes because there are also less facets to work with since they only have 14 facets whereas brilliant round cut diamonds typically have well over 50 usually, so overall it is extremely difficult cut this stone type and much less room for an error by the gem setter when placing facets so it makes every cut made to need that much more precision to be perfect since essentially one wrong cut would ruin the stone and the piece as a whole which is why only the highest quality examples make it onto highest end jewelry as a result. Additionally, the present timepiece concept is further accented by two marquis cut diamonds on either side of the dial which meet the platinum diamond set that is completely set with the brilliant round cut diamond making the timepiece extremely versatile in nature and high fashion and easily worn with other pieces of jewelry given its various cuts as well as timeless in nature since its main stone is highly celebrated as the diamond cut with to have the most power of popularity- since it is considered of the jewelers stone cut of the past present and future naturally only making sense why it would be used by Piaget in the present example and in none other than platinum which was only implemented in firm’s best examples and for their most important clients at this time. Also interesting to note eventually overtime Piaget’s all-diamond set creations were limited in production with only a few created in the earlier years as the firm moved towards larger mass production design concepts with hardstone dials in lapis tiger eye and jade mostly in white or yellow gold bracelet and bangle bracelets into the 1970s so as a result it made earlier all diamond examples such as the present example that much more unique, beautiful and collectible given the extra special attention to detail and workmanship.
