Description

Patek Philippe 5930G-001 Complications World Time Chronograph 18kt White Gold "Hong Kong" Rare Discontinued Edition, 3-Zone Hand-Guilloched "Décor Bleu" Dial, 24-hour and Day/Night Indication for the 24 Time Zones, Self-Winding Patek Caliber CH 28-520 HU Automatic Movement with Column-Wheel Chronograph, Skeleton Exhibition Case Back, Matt Navy Blue Hand-Stitched Large Scale Alligator Leather Strap with 18kt White Gold Fold-Over Deployant Buckle, 39.5mm

The Patek Philippe reference 5930G was first introduced at Baselworld, combining two of the most desirable complications from the brand - a chronograph function and world-time display. As with many recent pieces developed by Patek Philippe, the reference is loosely-based upon a historic watch - in this case the unique Ref. 1415 HU, from the 1940s.

While the 5930G harks back to this much-admired reference, its execution is decidedly modern. Beneath its beveled sapphire crystal, the blue dial is hand-guilloched in a circular pattern, contrasted by luminous-filled, applied white-gold indexes. The reference is also classically sized, at 39.5mm in case diameter and only 12.86mm thick, making it the world's perfectly balanced and thinnest world-time chronograph. A nod to its inspired design, the case of the 5930 further features ‘winglet’ style lugs and various brushed and polished finishes across the case.

As with other world-time displays from Patek Philippe, the function is activated via a pusher at 10 o'clock on the case. The time zone is displayed at 12 o'clock and advanced with each operation. While changing time zone, the hour hand is completely disengaged from the movement, so neither the amplitude, nor the steady progression of the minute hand are affected. The chronograph hand also continues unstirred.

Combining a time display (in 24 different timezones) and 30-minute flyback chronograph within the same watch, is no small feat. Patek Philippe achieved this through their caliber CH 28-520 HU - referred to as entirely-new, owing to the various modifications and new parts required, compared with existing calibres. Given the absence of a running seconds hand, the calibre was also developed to keep the chronograph-seconds hand running at all times, maintaining legibility. The calibre features a large, four-spoke Gyromax balance-wheel, with four poising weights, beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 A/h), with a guaranteed power reserve of 55 hours (50, with an activated chronograph).

As with all contemporary Patek Philippe watches, it has the Patek Philippe seal, guaranteeing its accuracy to -3 and +2 seconds daily, keeping time better than the industry benchmark chronometer grade movements. The movement is beautifully finished, with exquisite chamfering on all angles, polishing and decoration, in the form of Geneva striping.
