Apertures for day of week at 9, leap year at 12, month at 3 and moon-phase at 6. - Moon phases - Sweep seconds hand - Fold-over clasp - White gold - Sapphire-crystal case back protected by a hinged dust cover The Patek Philippe reference 5159 draws its lineage to the reference 5050 perpetual calendar. The 5050 was the first Patek Philippe pure perpetual calendar to break the $100,000 mark in the collectors’ market. The 5050 takes its cues from one of Patek’s all-time great watches, the reference 5016 tourbillon perpetual calendar automatic, which like the 5050 and this watch, has sweep seconds. Given the 5016 – 5050 – 5159 nexus, it is just a matter of time before this 5159 will also take its rightful place in the over $100,000 rarified air. The reference 5159 is very interesting aesthetically, as its dial follows the same conventions as the 5016 and 5050. Namely, the dials of this trio all feature both classical elements, like the roman numerals, hands, and minutes chapter at the periphery of the dial, and also playful elements like the retrograde date and the distribution of the day, month and leap year indicators. Significantly, these watches also have a center sweep seconds hand, which is a rarity. The Officer's case on the 5159 (also known as hunter-style) features a hinged caseback, which can be popped open with a flick of the thumb to reveal the sublime movement within. The hunter case is only offered on the 5159 in Patek’s current model lineup. Officer’s case is 18k white gold, with dimensions of 38mm diameter by 12.6mm thick. Constructed with 4 separate components, the sapphire display back is protected by a hinged solid case back. Slightly domed sapphire crystal in front, while display crystal is flat. The case lines on the 5159 are interesting - the bezel and case sides are rounded and the crown even has small, protective shoulders which morph into the hunter-caseback, while the lugs are squared on top, while curving downward for wearing comfort (and feature rather massive, exposed screws securing the lugs). While many Patek watch cases are minimalist, the 5159’s case is a rare, though perfectly executed, indulgence. The caliber is the automatic winding Patek Philippe Caliber 324/336 with 30 jewels and the prestigious Geneva Seal. Movement is adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism and in 5 positions. Dial is opaline white with roman numerals for hours, arabic numerals for date and in the minutes chapter. Dial displays day, date via retrograde display, month, moonphase and leap year. Hands are blackened gold, spade style and offer excellent legibility. Dial center features hand-carved guilloche. Strap is new hand-sewn Patek crocodile with a Patek 18k white gold deployant clasp. The 5159 is one of Patek's rarest modern watches, as production of the base caliber is highly limited. Also known as: Patek 5159G-001, Patek Philippe 5159G-001, 5159G001, 5159 G |
