Description |
This 5960P-001 is a fine example of a complication which has become almost synonymous with Patek Philippe: the annual calendar chronograph. Highly practical in its design and complexity, it is considered by many as the perfect everyday Patek Philippe, with useful functions displayed in a refined, clearly arranged dial layout and a very wearable amorphous case.
The Patek Philippe Ref. 5960 was Patek Philippe's first self-winding chronograph with an Annual Calendar and the manufacture caliber CH 28-520 IRM QA 24H. The Latest platinum version with the anthracite grey dial emphasizes the dynamic personality of this timepiece. This is definitely not your Dad's Calatrava; it is not even just a watch. The reference 5960 is a statement; a testament to Patek's heritage, a reflection of Patek's confidence in its leadership position in the industry, and a glimpse at the future, all in one spectacular wristwatch. Where do I even start, in describing Patek's newest masterpiece: the reference 5960 P annual calendar chronograph? Let's start with history: this is Patek Philippe's first automatic chronograph in their 167 year blue-ribbon history. It's also Patek's first flyback chronograph. And, due to the caliber's unique construction, the central chronograph seconds hand can be operated continuously (to serve as a conventional seconds hand) without harming the mechanism or adversely affecting accuracy. The reference 5960 also features the first completely in-house chronograph caliber from Patek since the early 1980s. (In the interim years, all of Patek's chronograph calibers have been built from Nouvelle Lemania ebauches). Finally, this chronograph is the first to feature the 30 minute and 12 hour chronograph indicators in the same subdial. So clearly, Patek has innovated meaningfully with their new automatic winding Caliber CH28-520. But we've only covered the chronograph so far... This newest Patek Philippe masterpiece also provides an annual calendar, with the day, date and month displays arranged in an arc from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock. Within the chronograph subdial there is a small aperture which displays a day/night indicator. To round out the complications, a power reserve indicator is located just underneath the date window. I could stop here, and we'd all be convinced that this is an awesome watch. But the story would only be half told. The Caliber CH28-520 is, once again, Patek's first ever automatic chronograph. Featuring column wheel construction, with 456 individual parts, the caliber also makes use of a massive 21k gold rotor, 50 jewels, 55 hour power reserve and is stamped with the Geneva Seal. Case is polished 950 platinum with a sapphire crystal front and back, with a diameter of 40.5mm. The 6 o'clock case side is set with a diamond. Chronograph pushers are pump style. Case back is screw down. While the watch is extremely refined and elegant, it is also more than a little sporty. Dial is a magnificent sunburst grey with applied hour markers with adjacent luminous dots and luminous hands. The chronograph subdial is oversized, and accordingly very legible. Chronograph hours scale is printed in blue while the minutes scale is in red. The associated chronograph hour and minute hand are the same color as their scales for ease in reading the elapsed time. Strap is hand sewn crocodile with a 950 platinum Patek Philippe deployant clasp. This watch is pre-owned complete with box and papers. It is in pristine condition and indistinguishable from new.
