This is an 18K yellow gold Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar 3940J. The solid, round, polished case has a stepped bezel with straight lugs. The month and leap year are displayed on a sub dial at 3 o'clock. The date and moon phase sub dial is at 6 o'clock, with the day and 24-hour time at 9. It has a matte silver dial with applied yellow gold hands and baton hour markers, and exterior dot minute indexes. It has a 46-hour power reserve and it's water resistant to 25m. The case, dial, and movement are all signed.
The automatic caliber 240-Q movement is rhodium-plated with fausses cotes decoration, and it has the Seal of Geneva quality stamp. It's constructed with 27 jewels, 275 parts, and a lateral lever escapement with three arms under a polished steel bridge. It has a 22K winding rotor and the patented Patek Philippe gyromax balance that adjusts for cold, heat, isochronism and 5 positions. It includes a shock absorber mechanism, and a self-compensating free-sprung Breguet balance spring. The leather strap has a matching yellow gold deployant buckle.
Patek Philippe made the very first perpetual calendar wristwatch in 1925. It's an incredible calendar innovation that self-adjusts for the months that have only 28 or 30 days, as well as for leap years. This recent incarnation was introduced in 1985 and was discontinued in 2006.
