Speedmaster Moonwatch "Alaska Project": remember... April 2007, the Omegamania sale organized by Antiquorum... The famous auction house was then offering one of these prototypes manufactured by Omega in only a few copies in the 1970s... No 29116425, Ref. st. 145.0022-69 was won for the sum of 64.900 Swiss francs, or about 40.300 euros...

In the early 1970s, Omega's "Project Alaska" team led by Pierre Chopard - whose name alluded to the temperatures prevailing in the 49th American state - set about developing an outer case (Swiss patent ch 537170 registered on 31 May 1973) designed to protect the famous Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch from the extreme temperatures encountered in space.

At the time, NASA was indeed planning to explore the dark side of the Moon and Omega wanted to ensure that the Speedmaster Moonwatch would withstand the temperatures encountered without any problems.

NASA, however, indicated that the Speedmaster, as it was, already met all their requirements perfectly. The Speedmaster "Project Alaska" was thus stopped at the prototype stage (whose aluminium outer casing had undergone an anodic oxidation which gave it a very particular red colour).

Today, the new Speedmaster Moonwatch "Alaska Project" produced in a limited edition of 1970 pieces pays tribute to its robust namesake. Ideal watch for the most intrepid adventurers, as it can withstand temperatures ranging from -148°c to +260°c (in space), an amplitude of more than 400 degrees!
