Daily Drivers: Great Watches for Under 5,000 Euros

Rolex Explorer II 16570

Rolex – you either love ’em or hate ’em. A lot of people go crazy for these Swiss watches, especially if you’re lucky enough to own one. Fans claim they’re the best watches ever made. On the other end of the spectrum are those who aren’t too impressed by the Submariner, Datejust, or Daytona. They often say things like, “Oh, everyone owns a Rolex these days.” Well, I beg to differ. Sure, Rolex may be the most widespread and renowned luxury brand, but that doesn’t mean you’ll find them everywhere you go. Also, within the brand itself, there are plenty of less-popular models that only the savviest watch connoisseur will recognize. Take the Explorer II 16570 with a white dial, for example. It gets relatively little attention, yet its quality, appearance, and the craftsmanship that goes into it are outstanding. You’ll be hard-pressed to find better value for money. This timepiece features a date display and a GMT function with a 24-hour bezel, all packaged in a clean steel case with a tidy white dial. You couldn’t ask for more.

Enthusiast’s Corner: Rare or Exceptional Timepieces

Hamilton Fontainebleau

We tend to look back on the 1970s as a wild time to be alive. This is not only true for the world at large but also for the watch industry. It was dominated by big and funky watch designs, colorful dials, and groundbreaking innovation. Designers in this era weren’t afraid to let loose and think outside the box. While the watch we’re looking at ticks all those boxes, it was not released in the 70s. In fact, the Hamilton Fontainebleau debuted in 1966. Back then, its oblong case was a brand new and totally unique. Most customers had never seen anything like it before. However, the Fontainebleau has more to offer than interesting looks. Inside, you’ll find the legendary caliber developed by Heuer, Breitling, and Hamilton-Buren. You can even argue that it was the world’s first automatic chronograph movement. At the very least, perhaps the first Swiss automatic chronograph movement? Either way, the Calibre 11 was undeniably ground-breaking in its time – just like the design of the Hamilton Fontainebleau.

Iconic Timepieces: Great Value for Your Money

Seiko SKX009 Pepsi

This is probably the most affordable watch we’ve ever featured in this section of an Editor’s Picks. Sure, we’ve already looked at the SKX007, but this time we’re focusing on its “fun” sister model, the SKX009. The 007 and the 009 are basically the same watch. They share their movement, size, and water resistance. The only differences are purely aesthetic: The SKX009 has a blue and red “Pepsi” bezel and a blue dial, while the SKX007 has a black bezel and a matching black dial. You can get the SKX009 on a Jubilee-type Seiko steel bracelet or save a few bucks by opting for Seiko’s quirky rubber strap. That being said, its size and overall design mean this versatile watch looks good on nearly any bracelet or strap. This is one of the reasons this timepiece quickly developed into a modern icon. With a price at or around $300, you shouldn’t pass on this watch!
