Description

Lemania WWW Dirty Dozen British Army Wristwatch c.1945

The WWW watches are perhaps the most popular and collectible watches amongst all those issued to the British Army. This is perhaps because they were the first to be specially designed and custom made for the British Army.

WWW stands for Watch, Wrist, Waterproof and was the descriptive code used by the British Army to identify it as a piece of equipment.

These watches began being manufactured and issued to the British Army in early 1945.

There were 12 Swiss manufacturers of the WWW watches and as such, the collection is commonly referred to by collectors and dealers alike as “The Dirty Dozen”.

Only around 8,000 Lemania WWW watches were made for the British Army during WW2. As such, good original examples of these watches are very sought after by collectors and can often be difficult to find.

The watch for sale is a beautiful example of its kind and is in excellent overall condition.

The hands and crown are all correct to the original specification of the watch.

The original factory dial is in lovely overall condition. There is some very light fading to the dial around the “10” marker.

The casing is in very good condition with matching case back and lug numbers. As expected, there is some wear and tarnishing to the outer chrome plating in places.

The 27A calibre movement is currently running extremely well and keeping excellent time.

The watch comes complete with a free six-month warranty, newly fitted NATO strap and quality handmade leather watch pouch.

Size guide for wristbands

1 | Lug width

The lug width is the width of the strap at the end that is attached to the watch. This is the interior distance between the two lugs (horn-like protrusions) on the watch casing. The strap will fit your watch only if the lug width of the watch is the same width as the strap.

2 | Buckle width

The buckle width is the width of the strap at the buckle end. If you want to keep your watch’s original buckle and replace only the strap, the width of the original buckle must be identical to the strap width. For watches with folding clasps, please choose a strap specially made for your particular clasp.

3 | Strap length

The strap length is the combined length of the short strap side 3A (without buckle) and the long strap side 3B. For metal straps, the length of the strap including the clasp is measured in the closed position.

4 | Strap thickness

Strap thickness is the height of the strap. Many leather straps thin out towards the buckle end, or “taper”. If you want to keep your watch’s original buckle and replace only the strap, the strap thickness must match the height of the original buckle. For watches with folding clasps, please choose a strap specially made for your particular clasp.
