Vintage Portofino Hand-Wound with Moonphase



With its narrow Roman numerals and moon phase display, the Portofino Hand-Wound exudes the same timeless elegance as the original 24 years ago, and has made use of its renaissance to correct a “flaw” – albeit a rather becoming one: the choice of the 98800-calibre hunter movement means that the moon phase and seconds displays are now back at their conventional positions of 12 and 6’clock, respectively.

The movement, which is based on the Jones calibre and features a nickel-plated nickel-silver threequarter plate, screw balance, Breguet spring and elongated index, has also undergone a modification: the accuracy of the moon phase display has been improved to the extent that it deviates by just one day in 122 years from the actual progress of the moon. In addition, the moon phase can easily be corrected using just the crown. The imposing 46-millimetre case remains unchanged.

The IWC-manufactured 98800 calibre is base on the the first Jones calibres; a further-improved movement based on the original calibre (98, 9820). This movement is a tribute to the ‘Spiegelei’ Portofino watch from 1984 with reference 5251.

This watch features:

- Polished Stainless Steel case.
- Matte black dial, White Painted Roman Numeral hour markers & minute indications on outer edge of the dial.
- Polished steel Breguet Style hands.
- Small Seconds hand sub-dial located at the 6 o’clock position – again with painted seconds indications.
- Phases of the Moon subdial at the 12 o’clock position. The moonphase on this watch is highly accurate with a deviation rate of only 1 day for every 122 years. The Moonphase is corrected/adjusted by the crown rather than a recessed button as is customary on most moonphase watches.
- In-house movement caliber 98800, beats at 18,000 vph, contains 18 Jewels & an approx. Power Reserve of 46 hours.
