Description

Plenty of sources online tell the story of the pilot’s watch but as a brief overview, the design originated in Germany during WWII. Designed for use in flight, the flieger (“aviator”) watches were issued not as personal gear but as flight equipment. With their dark dials, the watch’s white markers, numerals, hands, and text is readable at a glance, allowing for maximum attention to the piloting task at hand. Interestingly, no single company held a monopoly over the design as five separate German watchmakers – including IWC – were tasked with producing the timepieces as commissioned by the Luftwaffe (the German air force). For its part, the IWC Big Pilot exists in a special realm. Introduced in 2002 as a larger version of IWC’s famous Pilot lineup, its 46mm case is closer to the size of those original fliegers yet is still several millimeters shy of the whopping 55mm dimensions of the historical models. At this more manageable size, the stainless steel case is highly wearable and the broad face and minimal bezel make it one of the most readable dials available today. A date readout at the 6 o’clock position is the only complication on the dial aside from the power-reserve indicator. To that end, the Big Pilot stands out among its peers. Thanks to a massive Caliber 51111 movement, the Big Pilot has an incredible 7-day power reserve with hacking seconds controlled by the fluted screw-down crown. Finally, the brand new brown leather OEM strap matches the flieger style and with its folding clasp, ensures long-lasting wear. This piece is in like-new pre-owned condition having been recently serviced. It includes the original box/papers. See photos! This item is a truly special piece. Comes with our Feldmar Watch Company Certified Pre-Owned 2 Year Warranty.
