The design language of the IWC Ingenieur line is a homage to the technical ingenuity of the 1950s, when engineers were the heroes of the technological age. The Big Ingenieur, in particular, combines the industrial aesthetic of the Ingenieur SL (designed by the legendary Gerald Genta) with the proportions of one of IWC’s other icons – the Big Pilot. It is cased in solid 18kt rose gold and measures a beefy 45.5 mm in diameter, with a thickness of 15 mm. Thankfully, the Big Ingenieur’s muscular exterior is matched by its strong functional capability; it features a screw down crown, 400 feet of water resistance, and a soft iron structure within the case that shields the movement from magnetism. Powering the Big Ingenieur is IWC’s in house Caliber 51113 automatic movement, which features an impressive 7 days (!) of power reserve and is visible through a clear sapphire caseback crystal.
