This H. Moser & Cie. Heritage Centre Seconds Vantablack “Project X” reference 8200-1700 is a mysterious watch, produced in exceedingly minuscule numbers and in secret. No official communication exists about the watch. Paired with the 42mm bronze case is a Vantablack dial with an “X” and broad sword-style hands filled with luminous material. Powering it is the self-winding calibre HMC 200 with hacking seconds and 72 hours of reserve.

As far as mysterious origin stories go, this is a rather special one. This Heritage Centre Seconds Vantablack “Project X” reference 8200-1700 was produced in exceedingly small numbers, with reportedly no more than a handful of watches produced for an inner circle of the brand’s most important clients. This is evidenced by the fact that the watch comes with a box with room for eight pieces, providing some insight into the kind of clients this was piece was offered to. However, absolutely no official information exists about the “Project X”, further adding to the intrigue around it.

At its most basic, it is based on the Heritage Bronze “Since 1828”, a watch that was produced in a limited series of 50. The bronze 42mm case stands 11mm tall. While the rounded bezel and midcase are crafted from bronze, the rim around the display caseback is titanium. This lightweight arrangement, coupled with a compact, 46mm lug-to-lug distance, adds to its wearability. The case wears a brushed finish and notably the midcase features four strips of delicate coin-edges, designed for tactile feedback when handling the case.

The dial-side appearance is marked by the absence of almost any furniture, save for a grey “X”, suitably situated at 10 o’clock. The broad sword-style minutes and hours hands, as well as the seconds one, wear a similarly stealthy, grey appearance. However, viewed in the dark, both the X and the hours and minutes hands reveal themselves to be filled with luminous material. Irrespective of its mysterious meaning, the X serves the practical purpose of orienting the eye in low light conditions.

In keeping with the military-inspired aesthetic, it features wire-style lugs, much like pocket watches at the turn of the 20th century that were converted so they could be strapped to the wrist for use on the battlefield. However, unlike traditional wire lugs, these feature pins that are better suited to changing straps. The lugs are 22mm apart and the watch comes with a kudu leather strap with contrast stitching. It is secured with a matching, signed bronze buckle. Suitably martial is the onion-style crown.

The caseback reveals the self-winding calibre HMC 200 with hacking seconds and 72 hours of reserve. It features a free sprung balance and the movement beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour. The bi-directional winding rotor wears the brand mark. The bridges are decorated with the double crested Côtes de Genéve that is the brand’s signature. The baseplate wears beautiful perlage and the screwheads are all black polished. The brand mark and coat of arms are engraved on the bridges in gold.

The piece comes with its original watchbox as well as international warranty, certificate of origin, service paperwork and instruction manuals. This example, that was retailed in 2020, is a rare example of a piece of which very few have been made, with even fewer appearing on the market. It would make an interesting addition to an already-impressive collection of H. Moser & Cie. pieces.

If sold within the United Kingdom, this H. Moser & Cie. Confidential Project X Concept Vanta Black will be subject to 20% VAT

This H. Moser & Cie. Confidential Project X Concept Vanta Black is in excellent overall condition.
