Catalog Note

The present timepiece is a very rare and intricately designed Art Deco Platinum Diamond Set & Emerald French Cut “Bell” Form Shaped Pendant watch, commissioned circa 1920-1930s by the world renown timepiece Maison Gerard-Perregaux. During this timeframe, platinum was becoming especially scarce as a result of its increased use during the World Wars. As a result, the use of platinum for design concepts in timepieces and jewelry in the 1920s and 1930s was seldomly used due to its inflated price and limited availability making its’ use by leading design firms reserved only for the firms’ most important commissions for their most important clientele.

Gerard-Perregaux is considered one of the most elite timepiece Maisons since its start began in 1791 in Geneva and has been respected as a master of their craft alongside their most frequent competitors, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe whose Maisons also started during the same time and for most of the 18 th century collectively formed the finest Swiss watchmakers of their time during the early 18 th century both in technical and aesthetic terms as they competed against one another in exhibitions regularly. In fact, La-Chaux De Fonde where Gerard-Perregaux was located during the time this commission was produced was also known as the
capital of the watchmaking worldwide for the most important designs concepts being introduced.

Drawing from the inspiration of the form watch concept which was commissioned more commonly in the 1600s to 1800s and designed primarily with enameling designs only in such subject forms as mandolins, harps, beetles, or other various objects, the present example is a beautiful Art Deco gem set example which was inspired by the older 1700s style of enamel form shaped pocket watchmaking. As the roaring twenties had had just occurred and Hollywood’s Celebrities and Society’s elites such as Presidents, their wives & Royalty would gather to attend special events, piece unique commissions bejeweled in one of a kind designs concepts were commissioned for the purpose of outshining one another’s style in the public eye and as special order gifts.

The present example, designed in the shape of a three dimensional European bell is encrusted with two rows of 10 French cut emeralds outlining the top and bottom of the bell and approximately 85 brilliant round cut diamonds totaling approximately 7 carats throughout making it an exceptionally beautiful design concept that is both a work of art and part of history.

Notably, the present timepiece’s design concept has been extremely well thought out with immense attention to detail to each attribute. To the Gem Set exterior case side, the bell is designed with different levels of relief to create depth and draw special attention to certain elements. For example, French cut emeralds have been set into a slightly higher setting above the other parts of the bell to create an element of depth and produce a curved effect and at the top of the bell, there is also noticeable attention to where diamonds have been set in a raised relief of a round cut diamond pattern designed to be slightly higher than the other diamonds for further décor with a period pattern.

Under close observation, the entire commission has been carefully planned for each stone set and where the bell is not gem set, Girard-Perregaux has placed additional detail to ornate the piece along the profile of the timepiece with intricately hand engraved, beautifully detailed filigree patterns of various leaf textures and scrolling
workmanship which run throughout. Also, to note, On the reverse case side: the dial side, there is matching additional hand engravings which matches the profile of the hand engraved workmanship of leaf and scroll textures above the dial and additional open workmanship patterns indicative of this period’s style to add further décor.

The condition of the timepiece is also in perfect working condition and shows no signs of wear, no discoloration to case and has been recently serviced.
