homage to the contograf of the 1960s

On the occasion of the renowned international watch and jewellery fair Baselworld 2014, the Swiss watch manufacturer Eberhard & Co. presents the worldwide preview of its new model Contograf. The model is a reissue of the brand's 1960s creation of the same name, which became emblematic of its era thanks to its innovative features.
The company, which bears the name of its founder and watchmaker Georges Eberhard, has been in existence since 1887, making it one of the oldest companies dedicated to watchmaking, setting standards and creating value in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, a small village in the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel.
To preserve the memory of the company's eventful history and to enable today's watch enthusiasts to wear one of these historic models, Eberhard & Co. has begun to reissue some of its innovative watch models from the past as milestones of the watchmaker's art. One of them is the Extra-fort model. It was reissued to celebrate a classic 1940s chronograph that had already become a protagonist of various international auctions. In the meantime, the new edition has become one of the brand's bestsellers. With its homage to the Contograf, a contemporary interpretation of the 1960s creation, Eberhard & Co. opens the next chapter in its company history, recalling an era of optimism, vibrant creativity and innovation, and growing prosperity that allowed more people to afford fine objects such as mechanical Swiss watches, previously the preserve of a privileged few.
At the time, the Contograf from the 1960s boasted very innovative functions and the clear style of the watchmaker, who was always ahead of his time. It was a precise chronograph with two counters and a large date window at the 6 o'clock position, as well as a then revolutionary date quickset. This function and the waterproof pushers made the model suitable for everyday use and thus helped to establish watches in general as indispensable accessories. One particularly interesting element was the minute counter, divided into three sections and designed to control the duration of a phone call at a time when long-distance or even international calls were better made with caution because of potentially high costs....
Most of these original functions and features are also found in the new 2014 edition of the Contograf. In addition, there is no shortage of new innovative details: the new unidirectional rotating ceramic bezel serves as a frame for the tachymeter scale and was inspired by automotive designs. The case back is screwed like the original version and bears the inscription "Tribute to Contograf - 1960s". The date window at 6 o'clock has retained its typical trapezoidal shape. Innovative are also the associated new metal bracelet chassis. As an accessory, it is available with the Declic patented folding clasp. Caliber 8147 (eta 7750 13 ¼) ensures the reliability and precision that has earned Eberhard & Co. its reputation as a specialist in mechanical chronographs.
