Description |
This new model does not discard much of the precious details which made the original L.U.C Engine One one of my favourite timepieces. Indeed, the reamed motif remains, albeit modified to suit the orientation of the case.
The upper area of the mainplate, presents the text, “L.U. Chopard” in horizontal form, whereas the former model merely said “Chopard” in vertical text on the westerly flank of the dial. I am pleased Chopard have chosen to emphasise this is an L.U.C model. Whilst Chopard make incredible timepieces including the magnificent Superfast model, L.U.C is the epitome of their watchmaking empire. On the left hand side of the dial, a power-reserve indicator is presented. It is playfully labelled, “Empty” and “Full” and evokes thoughts of fuel gauges gracing the dashboards of classical cars. I particularly like the open-worked bridge which spans the power-reserve indicator, with the red needle located adjacent. The right hand side of the dial presents the tourbillon cage. Whilst the whirlwind complication was invented to counter the negative effects of gravity on the rate keeping of the timepiece, it is the spectacle of seeing it revolve on its axis which provides most delight to me. There is something very honest about the watchmaker sharing his skill with the wearer of the watch. Everything is visible, nothing is hidden beneath a misleading veneer. This model delivers virtue with its openness. Above the tourbillon cage, a red subsidiary seconds hand floats above the tourbillon bridge. It navigates a black circlet displayed on the crystal. Each 15 second integer is marked with a red stroke. Moreover the word, “Chronometer” is positioned adjacent the black circlet, reminding the wearer they are the proud owner of a watch with COSC certification. The case The footprint of the case remains similar to the Engine One, albeit the proportions have been altered to achieve the landscape design. The width of the case measures 44.50mm, the length 35.00mm and the depth 10.35mm. The case is made of brushed and polished titanium. This material has been widely used in aerospace, the medical industry and, of course, motorsport. It is resistant to corrosion, anti-magnetic and skin friendly, making it an ideal material for the watchmaking industry. The crown has been relocated and now resides between the lugs on the northerly aspect of the case. It reminds me of a fuel cap on an old racing car and I suspect this was the intention of Guy Bove, Chopard’s Director of Product Development. The watch jousts with light, augmenting the suns rays with polished and satin-brushed surfaces. This is a watch you just want to stare at and admire. Two flat sapphire crystal watch glasses sandwich the assemblage of meritorious micromechanics. The posterior lens reveals the Calibre 04-02-L which ticks over within the finely chiselled case. Chopard has not turned its back on several winning elements of the Engine One Tourbillon, perfectly illustrated in the form of the black alligator leather strap which features five rows of prominent stitching. The detailing on the strap summons memories of car upholstery harking back to the 1960s and 70s.
