S. Smith chased and engine turned case 53mm, 145.4 grams Footnotes • Martin S. Smith (1834 – 1899) was a successful Detroit entrepreneur who founded, with his brothers, a jewelry business in 1864. Seeking to attract the most affluent clientele, he included in his inventory a limited production high grade watch made by Charles B. Hoyt (born in 1828). Hoyt in turn had been influenced by, and possibly collaborated with, JH. Allison. The depression of 1873 ended Smith's watchmaking venture. Hoyt was then persuaded to join the ill-fated Freeport Watch Co. whose surviving movements are attributed to him. Following the disastrous fire that ended the venture, he worked with the Illinois, Rockford and J. P. Stevens companies before passing from the historical record. THIS IS A FINE COLLECTIBLE. DON'T INVEST IN BONDS or STOCKS. BUY HARD ASSETS PROVEN IN TIME. OTHER NICE FEATURES: Free U.S. Shipping. $58 Fedex overseas. |
