From a private collection

Approx. Ø38mm, rotating bezel, screw back, No. 32593, manual winding caliber Valjoux 72, very nice original black dial with white tachymeter scale and red graduation up to 180°, luminous hands, old black leather strap, intact, overhaul strongly recommended . The Jardur Import Company from New York first registered the copyright for a "Jardur 8 Feature Aviators Chronograph" with the Library of Congress in November 1939 and for a "Jardur Bezelmeter Aviation Chronograph" in November 1940. This watch was the result of Samuel Klepper's aviation experience. He wanted to develop a multi-function pilot's watch that would be advertised and sold directly to aviators through military concession stores and aviation magazines.

Today, we have tool watches for almost every possible environment and activity, but some of the very first tool watches were designed for pilots to help them navigate and make calculations during flight.
In this week's installment of our "Under the Radar" series, Tyler Vanes, Craft + Tailored's watch expert, introduces one of the most special pilot's watches of all time: the Jardur Bezelmeter Aviation Chronograph.

The Jardur Import Company was founded in 1937 by pilot and aviation enthusiast Samuel Klepper. Based in New York City, Jardur produced precision aviation instruments such as flight computers, protractors, navigation plotters and just about every instrument needed by pilots of the time. Jardur's signature instrument, however, was the Bezelmeter Aviation Chronograph, designed as a wrist cockpit instrument with a unique "degree meter" scale specifically designed to help pilots make standard speed turns.

Although Jardur was an American company, its watches used Swiss-made cases and movements, putting it in line with the Swiss leaders in terms of quality and timekeeping. This Jardur Bezelmeter from the 1940s is powered by the Valjoux 71, a first-class Swiss chronograph movement and the direct predecessor of the legendary Valjoux 72, which powers iconic vintage watches such as the Rolex Daytona, Heuer Carrera and Breitling Navitimer. However, when you compare the price of a Jardur Bezelmeter with the cost of a vintage Breitling Navitimer - arguably the most famous pilot's chronograph with a Swiss-made movement - the difference is staggering!

The Jardur Bezelmeter Aviation Chronograph is the epitome of a purpose-built tool watch and was the favorite of many pilots of the time. When you consider that you can purchase one of these fascinating pieces of aviation history for a fraction of the price of other Swiss-made professional pilot's chronographs, the Jardur Bezelmeter seems like a serious bargain for a historic tool watch that is quite capable of flying under the radar.
