Stunning 1950 Rolex Super Oyster Datejust ‘Overtone’ Big Bubbleback Gents Vintage Watch
This is a stunning example of the beautiful and extremely collectable steel and gold Rolex Super Oyster ‘Overtone’ Datejust or ‘Big Bubbleback’ dating from 1950. This is not only a remarkably rare watch but it’s in wonderful condition. The big steel and gold Thunderbird bezel case is in excellent condition but does have some minor damage to the teeth of the screw down case back and very shallow ding – I’ve tried to capture these on the pictures and I’d be happy to send the originals. The original Rolex signed ivory/cream dial has been professionally refinished to the highest possible standard and is just stunning. The original yellow gilt dauphine hands and applied gilt ‘spear-head’ hour batons provide the softest contrast to the dial and solid gold bezel. The original and very high grade Rolex signed perpetual movement is again in very good condition and has just been fully serviced by our professional watchmaker. To complete this iconic watch I’ve added a new, very high quality, Hirsch and Sonning Vintage Watches black alligator skin strap with steel Hirsch buckle.
Watches of this quality and in this condition are extremely rare and highly sought after – if history is any judge they will only increase in value.
As mentioned, it has just been serviced by my watchmaker and, in view of the high-grade Swiss movement, I will include a 3 month guarantee on the movement which is long enough for you to assess the working order. Also, I offer a full refund if you are not entirely happy, as long as the watch is returned within 14 days in the same condition with a recognised and insured courier.
The provenance polished (gloss sides and matt shoulders) oversize solid stainless steel and gold (Thunderbird bezel and setting crown) screw down case is in excellent condition, with only the most minor signs of wear – as mentioned, there are signs of minor damage to some of the teeth on the case back and a very shallow ding. The case measures 35 mm’s wide, excluding the rose gold Rolex signed screw down winding crown and 44 mm’s, including the lugs. The inside back is signed ‘Rolex Geneve Swiss Patented’ and the case number of ‘6105’. The serial number is 715 dating it to 1950 (the full serial number will of course be given to the buyer).
The original and stunning Rolex signed ivory/cream dial is just beautiful. The original and perfect yellow gold Rolex dauhpine hands and applied gold spear head hour batons flow beautifully into the dial and are perfectly framed by the gleaming gold Thunderbird Bezel. It is signed ‘Rolex Oyster Perpetual’, ‘Officially Certified Chronometer’ and ‘T Swiss T’ The lens has been replaced and shows no signs of wear or scratching.
The original Rolex signed and very high-grade Chronometer standard automatic movement is in very good condition. The movement has just been fully serviced by my professional watchmaker and is in excellent working order. It is signed ‘Rolex Perpetual Chronometer Swiss Made Patented’, ‘2 Ruby Jewels’, ‘Vis Tirette Screw Patented Self Winder’ and the references are ‘H36025 17378’.
This watch sits on a new, high quality, Hirsch & Sonning Vintage Watches black alligator skin strap with steel Hirsch buckle.
