Panerai 5218-201a Pre Vendome Logo NON Matching Dial 44mm.
Collectors condition with box and papers.
This is a very rare and unique collectible Panerai. It is considered one of the grail collectible timepieces for Panerai watch collectors. As you may know, Panerai made deep water gauges and watches for the Italian Navy since the 1860's. They began watch production just prior to WWII and continued until modern times. These gauges and watches were for military use only. In the early 1990's, Panerai received permission from the Italian Navy to make there watches available to the public.
The watches made between 1993 and 1997 are referred to as Pre Vendom Panerai. In 1999 the Panerai family sold their company to the Richemont company (the same company that owns Cartier, Jaeger LeCoultre and others). Along with the Vintage models, the Pre Vendom models are highly coveted by watch collectors. These were the watches made by the Panerai company while privately owned by the Panerai family.
The Pre Vendom 5218-201a was the first model created for public ownership. Only 300 were created! In this small production run, a handful of the black dials were given an application of varnish which made the numbers turn a yellow orange color. Of course Panerai realized their mistake and corrected their mistake with a new protective application that allowed the tritium to remain a cream color.
The dials with the yellow/orange numbers did not match the color of the cream colored hands. Thus, the name "non matching" logo watch became the slogan of this rare timepiece. Because less than 50 of these watches had this unique dial, they have become extremely collectible... not to mention GREAT looking! There is something very special about this watch that appeal to Panerai collectors. This specific model is unique in its history, condition and completeness.
Don't miss this opportunity!
