Marking its presence in 1954, Rolex Milgauss has been highly popular amongst the watch collectors of the world. The unique design of the timepiece was designed for the people carrying out researches in the labs and the electro magnetic field. Developed to gauge a highly magnetic environment, the timepiece was capable of resisting magnetic pressures up to 1,000 gauss.
Most of the Rolex models were designed with specific features like the Submariner, GMT or explorer developed for special purposes. The basic aim for developing a Rolex Milgauss was to design a timepiece for the people working in extreme electro magnetic environments. Owing to the damage caused to the watches in the electro magnetic fields, Rolex tend to design the Milgauss collection.
The Rolex Milgauss was laced with strong defense mechanism shielding the timepiece from the electro magnetic harm. The present version of the timepiece comes with a self winding movement and also resists water up to 330 ft in waters.
Equipped with high end functions, the concept of Milgauss was evolved after the need to develop a timepiece for the people working in the electro magnetic fields. The basic aim of the development of the timepiece was to deliver a timepiece with accuracy and precision without getting affected in the electro magnetic field.
The case of the watch was shielded with an iron case called Faraday cage which was named after the famous physicist Michael Faraday. The iron shielding secured the watch from the magnetic rays protecting it from the external harms. The term Milgauss comes from the French word Mille in which mille means one thousand and gauss is a unit of gauging magnetic density.
Being the first timepiece designed to resist the electro magnetic fields, it was laced with a magnetic intensity rating of 1000 oersted. The first model launched in the Milgauss collecton lineage was put forth in 1954 which had similar designing patterns in line with the Submariner. Housing a calibre 1065 movement, it was embellished with a dial fashioned with leaf shaped hands attached with an oyster bracelet. It was also incorporated with a twinlock crown shielding the crown from the external pressures.
With the passing of time, the Milgauss has witnesses several transitory phases marking many innovations in its making. In the recent years, the leaf shaped hands have been replaced with Mercedes pattern hands. After bringing the production of the timepieces to a halt for around 20 years, Rolex reintroduced the production of Milgauss collection back in the year 2007.
