Here it is Watch Fans, the newly released Rolex 216570 aka the orange handed Rolex Explorer II. Everything about this watch is spot on. The Rolex 216570 Explorer II marks the 40th anniversary of the original Explorer II. The case is enlarged to 42mm and houses the updated Rolex caliber 3187 which is entirely designed and manufactured by Rolex. The Caliber 3187 includes recent Rolex innovations such as Paraflex shock absorbers and parachrom hairspring. The bracelet (77210) features a new Oysterlock clasp with safety catch and Easylink extension link. On the dial, the 24-hour hand has returned and the orange color of the original 1971 model. The luminescent hour and minute hands are broader and more legible, and, on the black-dial version, their black base blends with the black dial to create a “phantom effect”.
The large orange 24-hour hand refers to the first model Explorer II in 1971 (a.k.a Freccione or Steve McQueen Explorer) with reference 1655 and I think Rolex did a neat job on their ‘homage’. Rolex aficionados all over the world have been discussing the broad hour and minute hands and whether this was either good or bad. Needless to say as we let the sales numbers do the talking, the verdict is good. Personally, this would be the modern Rolex I’d buy if I was in the running for one, I love the satin brushed bezel and orange hour hand.
