Patek Philippe Reference 1578 rose gold with black dial. Made in 1949 and sold in 1950. According to Christies” General Motors commissioned 20 of them for their top employees. These were the only 1578’s ever made with the black dial”. I am not sure that they were the only ones with black dials but who am I to dispute Christies. The ones I have seen lately at auction have been yellow gold.
This particular watch is rose gold and the case has never been polished. All the edges are sharp and well defined just as they were when it left the factory in 1949. There are some light scuff marks but no dings or dents. The scuff marks could easily be removed with a polishing cloth I don’t want to even use the polishing cloth on it, it’s that nice.
The original black dial is a perfect 10 with no blemishes. A stunning combination of black dial and rose markers.
Very rare combination and even rarer yet is the condition considering it’s 64 years old and I am 67. I only wish I was as preserved as it is…..
