This vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox (Cal. 825) watch with black dial has recently been serviced and it is in great working condition. This rare example of a Memovox watch is from circa 1961 and at a 37 mm contemporary size, it makes a stunning dress watch on the wrist.
While Memovoxes were fairly common, it is hard to find one in good, unrestored condition like this. The stainless steel case has the original, Jaeger-LeCoultre fluted crowns with 'JL' embossed on them. Furthermore, the original black dial makes it an even less common example than the silver ones, as black dials were usually reserved for more utilitarian uses, such as military purposes. The dial is made up of two parts; the outer dial has applied, silver index markers, while the rotating inner dial, that sets the alarm, has a white, painted triangle to set the alarm. Furthermore, there is a date aperture at 3 o'clock, while steel Dauphine hands finish off the elegant face.
The watch carries the in-house Calibre 825, beating 18,000 A/h, at its heart. This famous bumper automatic movement was inspired by JLC's 815. The latter was the first automatic alarm movement by the company and the first automatic watch with a repeater alarm. To this, the date function was added in the 825. The rotating inner register is fuelled by a dual barrel movement.
The mechanism's engineering ingenuity enabled the simultaneous operation of both the alarm and the date functions. The result was - in Jaeger-LeCoultre's own words - 'legendary'; its reliability and longevity makes this movement an iconic piece of the era. In fact, the movement continues to live on, as Memovox inspired JLC's contemporary Master Compressor and AMVOX lines.
This timeless Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox comes on a black lizard strap.
