Security notes
Please keep in mind that Chrono24 does not verify sellers’ identities (especially those of private sellers).
Due to the recent increase in attempted fraud, please note the following security advice:
For Buyers
- Get in touch with us if the provider proposes transacting via an escrow service. We will check for you for free whether it involves a legitimate escrow service.
- If an escrow service is employed for the transaction, gather the necessary information for the transaction directly from the escrow service, do not rely on redirected e-mails from the vendor.
- Take care with counterfeit escrow service pages and agreements.
- Be careful if the buyer asks you to manage the transaction through an obscure escrow service. While there are reputable escrow companies, unfortunately most escrow sites are faked.
- Watch out for redirected agreements that copy the Ernst & Young layout style. Ernst & Young provide no payment services in the sense of escrow services. Watch out for pages that copy DHL or TNT’s layout style.
- Do not pay for a watch via wire transfer to a service pretending to be 'Google Checkout'. Google Checkout does not accept payment via wire transfer (only via credit card).
- Never ever pay for a watch via Western Union.
- Is the provider willing to make further information, photos and documents about the watch available? Does an internet search reveal negative reports or forum entries about the provider?
- Be careful with sellers using 'free' email accounts like yahoo.com, live.com, aol.com, mail.ru etc.
- If an offer sounds too good to be true: It might just not be true.
For Sellers
- Be careful if the buyer asks you to manage the transaction through an obscure escrow service. While there are reputable escrow companies, unfortunately most escrow sites are faked.
- Please keep in mind when making a sale using Paypal to check that the payment has been irrevocably credited to your account before delivering the merchandise. Do not rely on confirmation emails from Paypal but check your account statement online.
- When accepting pre-payment via bank transfer, please make sure that the funds have been credited to your account irrevocably before shipping. Only rely on statements from your own bank regarding the arrival of funds.
- Be careful with potential buyers that offer a personal handover of cash in Northern Italy (Milan) or Brussels (Belgium).
- Be careful if someone offers you more than your asking price.
- Be careful if the buyer wants to pay via cheque from a foreign bank. While your own bank might add the funds in your account at first, if the cheque bounces, the funds will be deducted from your account and you may have to pay an additional fee.
- Be careful with buyers from Nigeria. Especially if you receive an alleged letter of a bank, which confirms the payment of the buyer and prompts you to send the goods to complete the money transfer.
- Be careful if you are contacted by a potential buyer via SMS. With fake e-mails from PayPal or other credit institution such as Royal Bank you will be asked to make a refund to the alleged buyer.
