This very rare, vintage, stainless steel Breitling Datora Ref. 799 from the 1940s has just been serviced and is in excellent vintage condition. It has perfect mechanical functionality and is guaranteed for authenticity.
Universal Genève was the most famous for producing these style of watches, it is not widely known that Breitling had its own version in the form of the Ref. 799. When it was released in the 40s, it was one of the most complicated watches on the market, featuring moonphase, date and chronograph functions. Not many of these watches were produced, and many have been badly restored, making this unrestored example very rare and collectible.
Sized at 35mm, it features thick bevelled lugs, with the angles still visible - a sign that it has not been over-polished. The stainless steel case is in overall good condition with its original caseback, marked ‘799’. It has square chronograph pushers and a fluted crown.
The dial has a mild patina to it, and applied steel Arabic numerals. A good sign that the dial is original is that the ’31’ on the date wheel is still red. The twelve o’clock sub-dial features the moon-phase and date wheel, the three o'clock and nine o’clock sub-dial features the minute counter for the chronograph and the running seconds respectively and the six o’clock sub-dial displays the hour counter for the chronograph.
Powered by a Venus Cal. 187, it is a manual-winding column wheel chronograph movement with a date and moon-phase module. Being known as a reliable calibre, it features a Glucydur balance wheel and a Breguet spiral mainspring, adding to its overall quality. The movement features an unmarked bridge, which is correct for the Ref. 799. The watch has a power reserve of approximately 44 hours.
